Professors Greiman and Kairoff Receive 2019 Reynolds Leaves
English literature professors Jennifer Greiman and Claudia Kairoff were awarded Reynolds Leaves for 2019-2020.
Claudia Kairoff will be on leave in 2019-20 in order to complete a book about Gender, Religion, and Politics in the Writings of Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea (1661-1720). Her monograph will argue that all three were imbricated in Ann Finch’s work to a degree not previously recognized.
Jennifer Greiman will be on leave in 2019-20 to complete her current book project, Melville’s Ruthless Democracy. In it, she traces Herman Melville’s persistent thinking about democracy in his prose and poetry from the 1840s to the 1890s to argue that we cannot fully read Melville without understanding the formative role of democracy in his work — nor can we fully understand American democracy without reading Melville.
