English Department Faculty Receive Spring 2023 Research and Travel Awards

The Wake Forest University English Department is pleased to announce that five English, Writing, and Creative Writing faculty have been awarded research and travel funds for the spring and summer of 2023. These faculty will conduct primary research, attend scholarly conferences, hold panels, and share their recent works. 

Lucy Alford received an award from the Archie Fund for the Arts and Humanities in support of research travel to East Hampton, NY, and to Tokyo and Yoro Park, Japan, in spring 2023. 

Jennifer Greiman received an award from the Kulynych Faculty Support Fund to attend the MLA convention in San Francisco in January 2023. She will be chairing a panel that she designed on “Melville’s Styles” and delivering the response to the presentations, and she will also be promoting her new book, Melville’s Democracy, which will be published by Stanford University Press in January.

Susan Harlan received an award from the Archie Fund for the Arts and Humanities in support of research travel to small museums and souvenir shops in Alabama, South Dakota, Montana, and Virginia as part of her project The Pyrex Menagerie, and Other Tales of Collectors and Our Things. The book combines personal writing and research to explore the joys of collecting, considering why we seek out, and hold onto, objects that aren’t necessarily valuable to anyone else. One chapter considers the relationship between memory and souvenirs. In the fall, she traveled to the extraordinary Museum of Wonder in Seale, Alabama for another chapter on cabinets of curiosities.

Zak Lancaster received an award from the Archie Fund for the Arts and Humanities in support of research related to his project, Undergraduates’ Perceptions and Performances of Writing Across Majors. 

Joanna Ruocco received an award from the Kulynych Faculty Support Fund to attend the AWP Conference & Bookfair in Seattle, Washington, in March 2023. She’ll be coordinating a panel, a reading, book signings, and editorial meetings on behalf of the independent press Fiction Collective Two (FC2), along with Margaret Langford, the FC2 Fellow.
