Meet Guy Witzel, Assistant Teaching Professor, Writing

Guy Witzel is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Writing Program. As a scholar, he concerns himself with the conversations within and between the environmental humanities and writing studies. He finds the renewed relevance of ecocomposition, with its commitments to place-based learning and community engagement, as well as the emergence of unashamedly therapeutic and attention economy-resisting approaches to (nature) writing exciting. As a teacher, he is grateful to share this enthusiasm with Wake Forest students and encourage them to see their writing as a means to confront today’s ecological circumstances, wrestle with the questions they raise, and re-invent our collective sense of what is possible. 

Prior to joining the faculty at Wake Forest, Guy taught undergraduates at The Ohio State University, where he earned his Master’s degree; SUNY Buffalo, where he earned his PhD; and High Point University. In the past he has written about the portrayal of climate change in the genres of horror and fantasy; his work has appeared in Plot and Science Fiction Studies. When Guy is not pondering the implacable weirdness of climate catastrophe, he’s rolling unusually shaped dice with his friends around a gaming table, hiking the ivy-clung landscape that is the North Carolina Piedmont, kayaking with his amazing wife, Sara, or doting on their beloved dog, Stevie.
