Jennifer Greiman joins Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies as Associate Editor

Associate Professor Jennifer Greiman is now Associate Editor of Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies, published by Johns Hopkins University Press. Leviathan features a bounty of scholarly articles, notes, reviews, and creative writing of a critical, theoretical, cultural, or historical nature on the impressive body of work of American novelist and poet Herman Melville (1819-1891). Published three times a year under the aegis of The Melville Society—one of the oldest single-author societies in the United States—Leviathan includes a regular feature, “Extracts,” for sharing Melville Society transactions and programs as well as abstracts of papers delivered at its annual MLA and ALA panels. Leviathan also regularly publishes special issues, book reviews, interviews, and poems.

Professor Greiman’s first issue as Associate Editor is the June 2020 issue (Vol. 22, No. 2). The special issue is titled “Melville’s England/England’s Melville.” Guest Editor Edward Sugden writes that “each of these essays combines co-extensive analyses of biography, literary influence, and intellectual legacy to draw a textured picture of how England shaped Melville and, then, how Melville shaped England.”  The issue’s articles can be viewed on Project Muse. 

Jennifer Greiman is Associate Professor of English at Wake Forest University. She is the author of Democracy’s Spectacle: Sovereignty and Public Life in Antebellum American Writing and co-editor (with Paul Stasi) of The Last Western: Deadwood and the End of American Empire. She is currently finishing a book that examines Melville’s career-long engagement with the problems and possibilities of democracy and is co-editing the Oxford Handbook of Herman Melville (with Michael Jonik).
