Professor Amy Catanzano invited to be artist-in-residence at Stony Brook University in spring 2018

The Department of English is pleased to announce that Professor Amy Catanzano will be an Artist-in-Residence for one week at the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook University in the spring of 2018.

In preparation for the visit, she has been invited to the Center for an additional week in October, where she will meet with scientists, visit a class, give a talk/poetry reading, and plan her residency. Previous visitors to the Center and its Art Program include Laurie Anderson and others. The invitation was extended by the Center’s director, Dr. Luis Álvarez-Gaumé, a theoretical physicist who Professor Catanzano met during her research trip to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) last year, which was supported by an Archie Award from Wake Forest. That research and her residency are activities related to her work as a poet, which, among other topics, explores the intersections of poetry and science.

Additionally, Professor Catanzano recently presented at the 2017 Rotterdam International Poetry Festival, where her digital poem on wave-particle duality was part of an international exhibit, The Gravity of Words, for 3D Poetry Editor, new software for digital poetry. The exhibit also showed at the 2017 OSLO Poesifilm Festival for Visual and Digital Poetry in Norway. Other recent activities include a presentation and poetry reading as a Special Guest in the Naropa University Summer Writing Program; a presentation at Duke University in a class, “Science Fiction, Science Fact,” co-taught by renowned literary theorist N. Katherine Hayles and quantum physicist Mark Kruse; a book signing at the AWP Conference in Washington, DC; and publication of her poetry and a limited-edition broadside of one of her poems in Perfect Wave literary journal.
