Kelsey Harrelson and Bri Carney awarded 2018-19 D.A. Brown Award for Excellence in Writing

Each semester, English faculty submit the best essays from their core (100-level) and upper-division (300-level) literature courses, and a faculty panel awards the writers of the top essay in each category the D.A. Brown Award for Excellence in Writing.

The 2018-2019 recipients of the D.A. Brown Award for Excellence in Writing are Kelsey Harrelson and Bri Carney.

Kelsey Harrelson, a rising junior Psychology major, was awarded the D.A. Brown Award in the Division II Core Literature Category for a paper she wrote in English 175 titled “Wharton and Cather: Battling the Literary Struggle of Confronting Gender Roles and the Patriarchal Construct of Society.“

Recent graduate Bri Carney ’19, who majored in English and minored in Creative Writing and Journalism, was awarded the D.A. Brown Award in the Upper Division Literature Category for her paper titled “Creating Queer Communities through Art: Why I Can’t Stop Writing About Being Gay.”  

The late D.A. Brown was a member of the English Department for many years. He was noted for his high standards, and on his retirement, a fund was established to recognize excellence in writing. Each year the English department recognizes exemplary writers in creative writing, 100-level literature courses, and 300-level literature courses in his name.
